BA Grade/Risk: 40/High.
Track Record: Hurtubise was a 39th-round pick of the Mariners in 2019, but his decision to head back to West Point for his senior year proved to be opportune timing. Just before he graduated in 2020, a policy was changed to allow professional athletes from service academies to apply to delay their military service until after their pro athletic careers. Hurtubise was one of the first to be granted this waiver, as he signed with the Reds as an undrafted free agent. Hurtubise missed all of April with a shoulder injury, but by mid-May he made his MLB debut as a pinch-runner. He is only the fourth player from Army to play in the majors.
Scouting Report: Hurtubise is a speedster who knows how to draw walks, get plunked and figure out a variety of ways to get on base. Once he reaches, his plus-plus speed makes him a basestealing threat. He swiped 19 bags in 20 tries in 2024, but his lack of power and bat speed makes it hard to project him as more than a useful backup. He has a contact-oriented approach and rarely swings and misses. He can play all three outfield spots with average defense and an average arm.
The Future: Hurtubise faces a lot of competition for a spot as a backup in the Reds’ outfield, but as a lefthanded hitter who makes lots of contact and can serve as a pinch-runner, he’ll be a useful player to ping-pong back and forth between Louisville and Cincinnati as needed.

BA Grade: 40/Medium
Track Record: The Reds were one of the most aggressive and one of the best teams at aggressively pursuing players as nondrafted free agents when MLB cut the coronavirus-affected 2020 MLB draft to five rounds. Carson Spiers has already made it to the majors as a 2020 Reds’ NDFA, and Hurtubise should soon follow. The Army product led all Reds’ MiLB hitters with a .330 average and reached Triple-A.
Scouting Report: Hurtubise has long impressed with his all-out, high-effort approach, but that intensity might also have made it hard to notice what a solid player he’s become. He has modest power, but he finished third in the minors with 10 triples. He can yank a ball over the outfielders’ heads every now and then, but he’s best as a pest. His short swing makes it hard to strike him out, and he knows that a walk can be as good as a double given his plus-plus speed. Hurtubise’s speed isn’t as useful in the outfield, where he’s a choppy runner and an average defender with a fringe-average arm.
The Future: Hurtubise’s speed, contact ability and versatility give him a very solid shot at a lengthy MLB career. He was added to the 40-man roster in November 2023. He’s slated to head back to Triple-A Louisville to start 2024, but could make his MLB debut soon.
