  Track Record: Mayfield established himself as one of the more polished strike-throwers in the 2024 draft class as an underclassman and was eventually selected 25th overall by the Padres. Mayfield signed a full-slot deal worth $3,442,100 and didn’t make his professional debut until 2025. Mayfield enjoyed plenty of success with Low-A Lake Elsinore, posting a 2.97 ERA with 88 strikeouts and 28 walks across 60.2 innings in 19 starts.
  
  Scouting Report: Mayfield has a controlled, low-effort delivery that he repeats well. He has impressive control of his body and attacks hitters from a slightly lowered three-quarters slot. Mayfield’s fastball averaged 90.9 mph and was up to 95 with life through the zone. It has a bit of a dead-zone profile—meaning that the vertical and horizontal break numbers are similar—but Mayfield’s ability to command the pitch allows him to get the most out of it. He is able to avoid hard contact, and the vast majority of whiffs he generates with his fastball come in the top third of the zone when he locates it above the barrel. Mayfield’s bread-and-butter pitch is his changeup. It sits in the low-to-mid 80s, and it’s another offering for which he has an advanced feel. Mayfield throws his change with conviction, and it regularly flashes both armside fade and late tumble. It’s a plus pitch that in 2025 generated a whopping 55% miss rate. Mayfield rounds out his arsenal with a high-70s-to-low-80s slider. He’s shown the ability to manipulate its shape, and it’s a particularly difficult look for lefthanded hitters. It flashes two-plane break and garnered a 37% whiff rate in 2025. Mayfield’s plus pitchability is a cherry on top.
  
  The Future: After dominating Low-A in 2025, Mayfield is positioned to begin his 2026 campaign with High-A Fort Wayne. With an appealing blend of strikes and stuff, he projects as a potential No. 3 starter.

  Mayfield established a reputation as one of the better strike-throwers in the 2024 class as an underclassman, though he didn’t pitch much on the 2023 summer showcase circuit. He’s a 6-foot-4, 200-pound lefthander with a smooth and easy delivery that he repeats excellently with great balance, solid extension and a steady finish in his landing. He has typically sat in the upper 80s and scraped a 91 here and there, but at PBR’s Super 60 showcase in February of 2024 Mayfield touched 94 and has the physical projection to dream on a bit more regular low-90s velocity in the future. On top of a developing fastball that he can spot with advanced feel, Mayfield has a mid-70s breaking ball and a low-80s changeup that look like solid offerings. Mayfield is old for the class after turning 19 in February and is committed to Oklahoma State.
