Phillips was a part of three consecutive state championship teams in high school and was a two-way player at Georgia last year before being dismissed from the team in April 2013 following a drunken-driving charge. He batted .419/.465/.558 in junior college this year, but his professional future lies on the mound. He has a quick arm and projects as a power reliever in pro ball with a 90-94 mph fastball that has touched 95 with natural sink. As a two-way player, he is much more of a thrower, with below-average control and projectable secondary stuff, but his athleticism gives him upside in both departments. His slider shows at least average potential but is inconsistent, and his changeup is even less developed. He has already had Tommy John surgery, and his delivery and arm action create durability and control concerns, but the 6-foot-2, 205-pounder offers stuff and athleticism.
