On the summer showcase circuit, Bates showed flashes of tools, but he wasn't physically developed and as strong as his peers. He added significant muscle as a senior and came out with more power in the spring. Bates has a compact stroke and stays inside the ball well, showing the ability to shoot line drives to the opposite field. He's a flexible, athletic receiver and handled himself well behind the plate on the showcase circuit. Bates is committed to Chipola (Fla.) JC, where he could boost his draft stock even more with another strong season.
