Lomeli began the year as the Friday night starter for St. Mary’s, but after sitting 86-88 mph and getting hit hard, he moved to the bullpen and made significant mechanical changes. Lomeli raised his arm slot, shortened his arm path and began sitting 93-94 mph in short bursts in relief. He posted a 2.82 ERA in seven relief appearances before returning to the rotation for the final series of the season. None of Lomeli’s secondary pitches is above-average, but he is an elite strike thrower and will alter his arm angle to keep hitters off-balance. His new mechanics and velocity boost give him a chance to rise as a reliever.

Draft Prospects
Lomeli had some heat after touching 93 mph at the WWBA Championships, but he missed the first month of his senior season with a shoulder injury and was limited to relief duty when he returned. He pitched only 25 innings as a senior, although his impressive turn at closer during the Braves' deep playoff run opened some eyes. Lomeli throws strikes and has sink on his fastball, but he is physically undeveloped in his 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame and his velocity drops off quickly. He is stiff in his delivery and it has some effort to it, leading many evaluators to project him to the bullpen. That profile, combined with his injury concern, has many evaluators believing Lomeli should honor his commitment to St. Mary's unless he is willing to cut a deal.
