Compton had an immediate impact as a freshman with Arizona State in 2024, when he hit .355/.427/.661 with 14 home runs and 16 doubles to win Pac-12 freshman of the year. That summer he also hit well in the Cape Cod League for Cotuit and entered his 2025 draft-eligible season with lofty offensive expectations. He regressed a bit and slashed .278/.383/.498 with nine home runs and 18 doubles. Compton has tons of strength and power packed into his barrel-chested, 6-foot-1, 225-pound frame. He has a relatively short and compact lefthanded swing that can generate easy plus raw power and 90th percentile exit velocities around 110 mph. While Compton’s power is obvious, his approach can often be a bit too boom or bust. He hit well out of the gate in 2025, but his approach regressed as the year progressed. At times he can both expand the zone and swing-and-miss too frequently. He hit just .139 against fastballs thrown 93 mph or harder and will need to sharpen his pitch recognition and bat-to-ball skills versus spin. Compton has some on-base skills and owns a respectable 13.2% career walk rate. There’s plenty of pressure on his bat because Compton is a high-probability left fielder who is just a fair runner, thrower and defender. He had some middle-of-the-first-round buzz and could still go there for a team that believes in his pure hitting ability, but he might fit best a bit later than that.

Track Record: Compton made an immediate splash as a freshman at Arizona State in 2024, hitting .355/.427/.661 with 14 home runs and 16 doubles to earn Pac-12 freshman of the year honors. He carried that momentum into a strong summer with Cotuit in the Cape Cod League and entered his 2025 draft-eligible season with high expectations. Though he regressed slightly, Compton still produced a solid .278/.383/.498 line with nine home runs and 19 doubles while upping his walk rate from 10.8% to 15.3%. The Marlins drafted him in the second round and signed him for $2 million, which was slightly under slot value. Compton hit .217/.354/.359 with two home runs, a 32.7% strikeout rate and 16.8% walk rate in his first taste of pro ball with High-A Beloit.
Scouting Report: Compton packs considerable strength and power into his barrel-chested 6-foot-1, 225-pound frame. He generates easy plus raw power with a short, compact lefthanded swing that produces 90th percentile exit velocities around 110 mph. While power is his calling card, his approach remains volatile. After a strong start to 2025, his discipline regressed, as he expanded the zone too often and swung through quality velocity. He hit just .139 against fastballs at 93 mph or higher. He’ll need to refine his pitch recognition and contact skills, particularly against spin. Compton does show some on-base ability with a 13.2% career walk rate as an amateur, but there’s pressure on his bat given his likely future in left field, where he profiles as an average runner and a fringy thrower and defender.
The Future: The Marlins bet on Compton’s power when they selected him in the second round. For him to meet those expectations, continued refinement of his approach will be key. He’s expected to begin that process back at High-A Beloit in 2026.

Compton won the Pac 12’s freshman of the year award in 2024 after hitting .355/.427/.661 with 16 doubles, 14 home runs and 51 RBIs. At 6-foot-1, 225-pounds, Compton’s physicality is akin to a brick wall. He has thunderous raw power that is pushing a 70 on the 20-80 scale, and he’s far from a metal bat merchant. That power translated just fine to wood bats in the Cape Cod League in 2024 when he slashed .331/.414/.489 with six home runs in 38 games for Cotuit. His pitch recognition and swing decisions both took a step forward in that stint as well. While power is his carrying tool, there’s a chance his hit tool ends up as average with more contact ability. Compton moves better than one would think in the outfield, though he is a likely left field profile in pro ball.
