  A strong and physical, 6-foot-1, 201-pound infielder, Smith struggled over the summer showcase circuit and particularly looked overmatched against the pitching at the Area Code Games, but he’s gotten attention this spring and swung the bat well for Buchanan High. He has bat speed and raw power in the tank, but it’s a swing that is not presently geared for fully tapping into that power. Over the summer, Smith showed a tendency to pull out early on his front side and give up the outer half of the plate—also looking vulnerable against soft stuff below the zone—but some scouts think he is a good enough athlete to make changes to his swing and learn how to elevate the ball with authority more consistently. Because of that, he profiles as a power-over-hit bat—but it could be above-average power. He has solid hands and defensive actions at third base, with a chance to be an above-average defender with plus arm strength. Smith is an average runner who could slow down in the future. He’s committed to Oregon but teams highest on his bat might want to buy him out of that commitment in the fourth-to-eighth round range. Smith would be a draft-eligible sophomore in 2024 if he makes it to campus.
