Illinois had a magical season that included a Big Ten Conference regular-season championship and 27-game winning streak. Duchene was a key piece to it thanks to a mean streak and competitiveness that suited him well to being the Illini's Friday starter, despite the presence of first-round arm Tyler Jay. Duchene pitches with toughness and moxie and doesn't back down from hitters. His stuff doesn't jump out, but he throws quality strikes repeatedly with an 87-91 mph fastball and can really locate his breaking ball, which scrapes 80 mph and sits in the upper 70s. He has a bit of a wrap in his delivery, but it hasn't hampered his control. He throws his changeup with conviction as well, giving him three average offerings he'll throw in any count. He ranked in the top 15 in the country in ERA (1.30) and strikeout to walk ratio (7.08). Durable at 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, Duchene is an old-school type who rubs some teammates and opponents the wrong way but always seems to back up his words with winning actions.
