Undrafted out of high school, Autrey has made rapid progress since signing out of North Carolina. The Devil Rays named him their minor league pitcher of the year after he set an organization record with 14 victories in his first full pro season. Autrey made significant improvements with his confidence last year, both in himself as well as with his pitches. He no longer tried to strike out every batter, as he did in his pro debut. He started getting ahead in the count with his low-90s fastball, then mixing in his slider and changeup. He throws all three pitches for strikes, moves his offerings inside and out, and does an excellent job of keeping his pitches down in the strike zone. The Rays also like Autrey's bulldog mentality and his work ethic. He hasn't missed many bats in the minors, which may mean he lacks a major league out pitch. With a good spring, Autrey will move up to Triple-A in 2004.
