A team could jump up and take Ewing as high as the fourth round if it believes in his ability to catch. He's built like a catcher at 6-foot-1, 220 pounds and has the strength to handle it, but he hasn't played back there consistently. He caught four games early in the 2013 season before shifting to first base, where he's an adequate defender, and had seven games behind the plate this spring. He did catch with some regularity in the Cape Cod League last season and showed average arm strength, but his receiving would need a lot of work. Rice plays him more at first because it leans more on his bat. He was the team's leader in home runs and RBIs entering postseason play and has solid-average power to go with a solid hitting approach and present strength. Most scouts do not see Ewing as an impact bat, as he tends to struggle with offspeed stuff and has fair bat speed.
