Murphy has a hitting track record that helps overcome his average 5-foot-11, 195-pound body. He was MVP of the Great Lakes League in the summer of 2012, hitting .369 with nine home runs, then hit .314 and slugged .526 last summer in the Northwoods League. Murphy has strength in his quick swing and ranked second in the Missouri Valley Conference (behind potential first-rounder Casey Gillaspie) with 12 home runs. He has an unconventional set-up at the plate that leads him to hit off his front foot a lot and get out front early, leading to swing-and-miss issues. Murphy's power is his best tool; he's an average runner and thrower who fits better in right field than in center, which has been his primary position.
