The split-finger fastball used to be a regular feature of the average major league bullpen. As Roger Craig's disciples spread around baseball in the 1980s, the pitch was every bit as popular as the cutter became in the 2000s. But it's fallen into disfavor in the U.S. (if not in Japan) after a string of Tommy John surgeries. While few American pitchers throw a splitter anymore, Herron has had it as a regular part of his pitch selection for years. Herron's combination of an above-average low-90s fastball and his splitter have been too much for junior college hitters. Herron, a 32nd-round pick of the Cardinals in 2014 out of high school, struck out 130 in 76 innings this season. He's signed with Missouri State.
