VanMeter presents a conundrum to scouts as a gifted lefthanded hitter who's not physically ready for pro ball. He has a sweet lefthanded swing, repeatedly barrels balls and excelled in showcase tournaments before his senior season began. However, he carries just 165 pounds on his 6-foot frame and doesn't have much present strength or power. He has an average arm, but his fringy speed will necessitate a move to second base in pro ball. He'll step right in at shortstop if he attends Illinois State. VanMeter's instincts and makeup are off the charts, further endearing him to scouts who are focusing on his bat. He has been crosschecked and may be signable if he goes in the first 10 rounds.
