Covey showed one of the best arsenals in the 2010 high school draft class, and the Brewers made him the No. 14 overall pick. But he discovered that summer than he has diabetes, so he decided to attend USD in order to stay closer to home and learn how to manage his condition. His collegiate career has been rocky, as he posted a 7.60 ERA in just 34 innings as a freshman, was better as a sophomore (6-3, 3.32) but took a step backward as a junior this spring (4-4, 5.46 with 58 strikeouts and 36 walks in 61 innings). He still works at 90-93 mph and occasionally touches 94-95, but scouts say he doesn't trust his stuff and too often overthrows, especially with runners on base. Covey is much better out of the windup, as he has had a tendency to rush his delivery in the stretch, though he made a mechanical adjustment prior to his last regular-season start against Portland that helped. His slider has good tilt and can be an out pitch against righties, and he favors his short curveball against lefties. He has shown an average changeup with good arm speed and fade, but it remains a work in progress. Covey has a physical 6-foot-2, 200-pound frame, with no glaring flaws in his delivery, so the source of his command issues seems to be mental. A team will gamble on his size, stuff and pedigree and could be rewarded with a future middle-of-the-rotation starter. He figures to go off the board between the third and fifth rounds.
