A Washington prep product, O'Neil starred in the West Coast League prior to his freshman season at Oregon, hitting a home run in the college league's all-star game. He never got into a game for the Ducks, however, and transferred to Central Arizona, where he played two seasons, including one with his brother Conner, a pitcher, joining the roster. A 33rd-round pick out of high school, O'Neil struggled as a freshman for the Vaqueros but hit .347 with six homers in the wood-bat Arizona CC Athletic Conference as a sophomore, making steadier contact. He has plus pull power and has matured off the field as well as on it. O'Neil is a decent athlete who fit better at first base this season for Central Arizona but has an average arm and should be capable of playing left field again.
