A 6-foot-5, 225-pound righthander, Ellerts led Florida Southwestern JC in innings this spring, posting a 2.48 ERA over 14 starts and 69 innings. He struck out 101 batters (13.2 K/9) and walked 36 (4.7 BB/9) and after the season performed well in the Cape Cod League for 12.2 innings where he posted a 2.84 ERA and continued to show strikeout stuff and control questions. He throws a fastball in the 89-93 mph range with solid riding life and throws two solid breaking balls. The first is a 12-to-6 curveball in the upper 70s with good depth and bite and the second is a low-to-mid-80s slider with more sweep and slurvy shape at times but also solid bite. A head whack and his shaky track record of throwing strikes should move him to the bullpen at the next level, but with a step forward in velocity in shorter stints, his stuff could play nicely there.
