Hollan is a 6-foot-5, 200-pound lefthander who pitched for San Jacinto (Texas) JC in 2022, but moved to Arkansas for the 2023 season. He had a loud fall showing where he impressed scouts with mid-90s velocity from the left side and raised expectations for his first showing in the SEC. He posted a 4.13 ERA this spring in 15 starts and 80.2 innings, with a 21% strikeout rate and 8.2% walk rate. Holland didn’t have quite the strikeout numbers that scouts were expecting, but he is more projectable than a typical college pitcher with an ultra-lean frame that could still add weight and velocity. This spring he averaged 90 mph on his fastball despite the uptick he showed during the fall, though he did scrape a 97 at peak velocity. He throws three secondaries: a sweepy slider around 80, a mid-70s curveball with similar shape and a mid-80s changeup. The slider and curveball were Hollan’s most effective swing-and-miss pitches this spring, but he showed solid feel for all four offerings and was equally effective against both righties and lefties. While Hollan doesn’t have a single plus pitch currently, he does a lot of things well and has a frame to dream on while throwing from the left side.

Track Record: As a third-round pick selected out of Southeastern Conference power Arkansas, Hollan may look like a pick that’s playing it safe. In reality, he’s one of the upside plays of the Reds’ 2023 draft class. He spent two years at San Jacinto (Texas) JC before moving to the Razorbacks’ weekend rotation for his draft year. He has shown flashes of dominance but moments of inconsistency as well.

Scouting Report: Hollan generally sat in the low 90s at Arkansas, but there’s plenty of hope that he could end up sitting more in the mid 90s as he continues his strength training. He’s skinny for now, and he’s touched 95-97 mph at times, including pretty regularly in fall ball at Arkansas, so there should be more velocity to come. Hollan has a slider and curveball that can sometimes get too similar and a mid-80s average changeup. None of his secondaries are an above-average pitch, but they should tick up with added velocity.

The Future: Having five picks in the top 105 gave the Reds the chance to add a pair of safe college pitchers at the top of their class and a pair of more projectable pitchers soon thereafter in Hollan and Cole Schoenwetter. If Hollan keeps adding strength, he could soar up this list over the next two years.
