In high school, Peterson once spun a trio of no-hitters in a row. He began his college career at Oklahoma State, but after working out of the Cowboys bullpen he transferred to Illinois-Chicago, where he got the chance to work as a starter. Peterson is a well-built 5-foot-10, 180-pound lefthander. The lefty is a pitcher whose average four-pitch mix plays well because he mixes his pitches and locates them well. Peterson doesn’t have a lot of velocity yet—he sat at 90 mph this year and maxed out at 94. But his fastball does generate above-average carry and comes in at a relatively flat angle thanks to his height. His sweepy, average low-80s slider and average low-80s changeup are nothing spectacular, but he hits his spots and he’ll mix in a high-70s curve that has a little more downward tilt than his slider. Peterson went 4-4, 3.89 with 10.4 strikeouts per nine and 2.1 walks per nine in his only full season in the starting rotation. He projects as a back-of-the-rotation starter.
