Shade was draft-eligible in the 2022 class and ranked as the No. 395 prospect, but he went undrafted and returned to Oregon for his third season at the program. He had the best season of his career in 2023 and hit .335/.422/.521 with six home runs and 16 doubles that came with a 19.3% strikeout rate and 7.9% walk rate. While Shade has continued to add strength over the last few years, he projects to be a below-average power hitter despite some impressive home runs to the pull side in batting practice. He is listed at 6-foot-1, 205 pounds and despite a near 50% flyball rate, had just a 7.4% home run/fly ball percentage and modest exit velocities, including an 86.4 mph average. He has turned in a few loud peak velocity EV numbers, which creates some encouragement that he can add a bit more power, though he might need to cut down on a 30% chase rate to fully tap into that with a wood bat. Shade does have a chance to profile as an everyday player despite the lack of power, thanks to standout defensive ability and speed in center field. He is a plus defender and plus runner who consistently turns in sub-4.1-second run times from the right side. His arm would limit him to left if he has to move off to an outfield corner.

Shade was primarily used as a defensive replacement for Oregon during the 2021 season, where he played 28 games but logged just 13 plate appearances and tallied three hits. Shade added a significant amount of weight over the offseason which paid off with a significantly improved offensive approach as he became the team’s starting center fielder. He slashed .305/.400/.438 with five home runs, 13 doubles and 16 stolen bases. Shade’s best tool is his defensive ability in center field, with some coaches going as far as saying he’s a plus-plus defender. Despite his increased mass, Shade doesn’t offer much raw power, and his home runs this spring came exclusively to the pull side. His exit velocities are quite modest, and he hammered fastballs and the top-end velocity he saw this spring but needs to cut down his swing and miss vs. the soft stuff.
