McGuire looked like one of the top prep infielders in the country early last summer after swinging a hot bat at USA Baseball's Tournament of Stars, but he has not built on that momentum. He made Team USA's 18-and-under squad but went just 3-for-22--albeit with seven walks--at the 18U World Championship. He also had a tough outing at the East Coast Professional Showcase while experiencing pain in his left hip. It turned out he had a partially torn labrum and bone chips, so he had surgery to repair the injury in September. He has shown better mobility this spring, though he is still a below-average runner and will move off shortstop at the pro level. He has the actions and arm to stay on the left side. While he shows potential with the bat, he may lack the power to profile at the hot corner. He has some to the pull side, but he lives more in the gaps. He could also get a look at second base, though scouts aren't sure how well his feet would work there. Most scouts have him in the fourth- to sixth-round range, which likely won't be high enough to buy him out of his commitment to Texas.
