  Beard last year collected 68 strikeouts across 65.1 innings to go along with a 5.51 ERA. He’s off to a fantastic start this spring, and through 15 innings he’s compiled a 3.00 ERA with 32 strikeouts to eight walks. Beard attacks from a straight over-the-top slot and a tough-to-pick-up 6-foot-9 release height. His fastball sits in the low 90s, but it jumps out of his hand and has plenty of natural carry up in the zone. He does an outstanding job of maintaining his arm speed on his mid-70s changeup that gets fantastic separation off his heater—in 2024, it averaged 15 MPH off—and it is an unbelievably difficult change of pace for opposing hitters. It’s a plus pitch that flashes consistent tumble. Beard also features a mid-70s curveball that flashes big-time depth and downward bite, as well as a mid-to-upper-70s slider that is distinct in shape with lateral life. Beard’s command can waver at times, though he still profiles as a starter at the next level.

  Beard is a projection lefthander with a lean, 6-foot-3, 180-pound frame that looks like it can add plenty of good weight in the next few years. He has good balance on the mound and throws from an almost straight over-the-top arm slot. Beard mostly works in the upper 80s with his fastball, and he also mixes in a low-70s curveball with 12-to-6 shape and tons of depth. He also throws a changeup that floats over the plate in the low-to-mid 70s. Because of Beard’s lack of current velocity, pro teams might be inclined to let him reach campus at Florida Atlantic. Still, he shows the makings of a solid lefty starter when he adds more strength and power.
