Rosario came from the Dominican to put himself on display at the Area Code Games in Long Beach in August, where he emerged as one of the top three prospects at one of the nation’s premier amateur talent showcases. By October, the Phillies had signed him for $700,000, the equivalent of a second-round bonus. The switch-hitting shortstop’s game revolves around speed at this point. While his quickness, arm strength and fluid actions stand out on the bases and in the field, the Phillies believe he can develop into an exciting offensive player as well once he matures into his projectable frame. Rosario made his first professional appearance in instructional league, flashing his tools in front of the player-development staff. They were encouraged by his bat from the left side and plan on getting him initiated slowly in extended spring before launching his career in a short-season league in 2001.
