Cuello was one of the last of a multitude players from the Dominican Republic signed by scout Pablo Cruz before he cut his longstanding ties with the Pirates and moved to the Padres. Cuello had a so-so debut in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League in 2000 then was a major surprise in his first taste of the United States last season. He's an exciting player with outstanding speed who always seems to be in the middle of the action. Though he seems best suited to hit No. 2 in the batting order, he has some gap power. He has good range, particularly to his left, and is very adept at turning double plays. Cuello has a tendency to try to make the spectacular play when it isn't there. He needs to get under control and not take so many needless risks. He also tends to swing at bad pitches and needs to develop more patience if he is to hit high in the order. Cuello is still a ways from the major leagues. He'll get a chance to prove himself over a full season this year as Hickory's second baseman.

As with Francia, managers were enticed by Cuello's blazing speed and flashy defense. One of the youngest players in the league, he also showed the pop to drive the ball in the gaps. New Jersey manager Brian Rupp marveled at his ability to create havoc, and Saul concurred. "He could be an impact player because he can cause problems for the defense," Saul said. "He's small but he's got a little punch." "He can play, he's got range and a plus arm for a second baseman," Klebe said. "When he turns the DP, the ball hardly touches his glove."
