McElvain has a great pitcher’s frame at 6-foot-4, 210 pounds and throws with an aggressive delivery that features solid arm speed, lots of length and a wrist wrap in the back of his arm stroke and a bit of effort in his finish. He throws a fastball in the low 90s that has touched 95 and uses a mid-70s breaking ball with two-plane break and good horizontal sweeping action that has been effective against both righties and lefties. McElvain has flashed a mid-80s changeup to righthanded hitters but it’s rarely used. McElvain has impressive size and stuff for a high school lefthander, but he was inconsistent this spring both in terms of his control and the quality of his breaking ball. When he’s not synced up, throwing strikes and getting on top of the breaking ball, he can look like a hard-throwing high school reliever. When he is finding the zone and the breaking ball looks crisp, it’s easier to dream on him being an impact lefthanded starter. McElvain is committed to Vanderbilt and is probably a bit of a split-camp pitching prospect who has exciting pure arm talent nonetheless.
