View Draft Report
A projection righthander with a lanky and loose, 6-foot-3, 175-pound frame, Izzi stood out to scouts during the fall of 2021 in Jupiter. At the event, he showed a fastball in the 90-93 mph range and touched 95 with scattered strikes and secondary stuff that showed glimpses but was still in the nascent stages. This spring Izzi has ticked up in the velocity department, with a fastball that has touched 96 and a slider that has shown more power in the 82-87 mph range with spin rates around 2,500 rpm. His changeup is also firmer than it was during the fall, going from a low-80s cambio to an 86-87 mph offering with 1,500 rpm spin. Izzi has long legs and arms and throws with an arm action that features plenty of length in the back, but he has a fast arm from a higher, three-quarter slot. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him regularly getting his fastball into the upper 90s in the next few years, though the consistency of his breaking ball remains a bigger question. Izzi is committed to Wichita State.

BA Grade/Risk: 45/Average
Adjusted Grade: 35
Track Record: Seen as highly projectable coming out of the same high school team that featured Noah Schultz, Izzi was taken in the fourth round by the Mariners in 2022 and signed away from a Wichita State commitment for $1.1 million. After a couple of up and down seasons to start his career, he was having an uneven year in High-A Modesto when he was shipped to the Diamondbacks as part of the Josh Naylor trade. He fared well across six starts with his new organization, including a one-hit, nine-strikeout performance in his last outing of the season.
Scouting Report: Izzi sits 94 mph and tops at 97 mph with his fastball, averaging 17.2 inches of carry. He has a low-80s sweeper and a mid-80s gyro slider, both of which elicit whiffs. He also throws a power changeup with depth and run. Some see the delivery of a future starter while others believe he has a tendency to open his hips early in order to generate torque, which can hurt his command. Strong outings can go off the rails quickly, sometimes due to walks. He is still learning to sequence his pitches effectively.
The Future: Izzi’s sometimes shaky command portends some reliever risk, but his arm strength and ability to spin the ball suggests a strong fallback option in relief. With a strong frame and deep pitch mix, he still has a chance to be a back-end starter.

BA Grade/Risk: 45/High.
Track Record: The Mariners drafted Izzi in the fourth round in 2022 out of an Illinois high school and liked him enough to sign him for a well-above-slot $1.1 million. He was a raw draft pick who needed some time to develop. He struggled in the Arizona Complex League in 2023 but then made significant strides in 2024, with a 2.85 ERA across 110 innings in the Low-A California League, albeit with a middling strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Scouting Report: Izzi’s fastball is already 92-96 mph with some uphill ride and run, and he’s projectable enough to be optimistic about another tick coming down the line. His slider is a horizontal sweeper that sits in the low 80s. It’s inconsistent and often lacks bite, but he will flash an average or better one at times. His changeup is the better of the two secondaries. Its shape is also inconsistent, but he shows good arm speed, and it will bottom out at its best. Izzi’s control and command are erratic at the moment, but he’s young enough and athletic enough to be hopeful for walk rates good enough to remain a starter.
The Future: Izzi is a long way away, but has the frame and three-pitch mix to be a midrotation starter at peak. He will need to improve his strike-throwing and tighten up his breaking ball to get there. He will likely head to High-A Everett and spend a large portion of 2025 there.

BA Grade/Risk: 45/Extreme
Track Record: Izzi emerged as one of the top high school pitching prospects in the 2022 draft class with a breakout showing at the WWBA World Championships in Jupiter, Fla. He teamed with lefthander Noah Schultz to give Oswego (Ill.) East High one of the top high school pitching duos in the nation in the spring and was drafted by the Mariners in the fourth round, signing for an above-slot $1.1 million to forgo a Wichita State commitment. Izzi did not pitch after signing, but he impressed at the Mariners' postseason fall development camp.
Scouting Report: Izzi has a long, lean build that screams projection and upside. His fastball sits 92-96 mph out of a clean delivery and arm action and should tick up as he adds weight and strength to his frame. His best secondary pitch is an above-average changeup with armside run that sits in the mid-80s. Izzi's breaking balls are targeted areas for growth. His curveball shows good shape and he has added a slider with intriguing spin rates, but both pitches need more power and finish. Izzi is still a gangly, long-limbed teenager and should add the strength and stability to finish pitches as he gets more physical. He throws strikes with average control.
The Future: Izzi has intriguing rotation potential, but he has years of strength gains ahead. He will make his pro debut in 2023.
