Stieg was a talented multi-sport athlete in high school who played quarterback and wide receiver on the football team, played center on the basketball team and both hit and pitched on the baseball team. He pitched out of the bullpen in 2023 for Virginia Tech before moving to the rotation in 2024 where he posted a 4.70 ERA over 13 starts and 51.2 innings, with a 21.1% strikeout rate and 5.7% walk rate. He blew out his elbow at the end of the season and needed Tommy John surgery, which also kept him off the mound for the entirety of the 2025 season. Steig’s health makes him a conundrum, but the 6-foot-4, 220-pound righthander looked like a top-three-rounds talent when healthy. While he didn’t amass huge strikeouts, he did average 93-95 mph with his two-seam fastball, which topped out at 97 and has tons of running life from a low three-quarters slot. It has groundball-driving properties, but he tended to pitch up in the zone and managed only a 40% groundball rate with it. Stieg equally deployed a low-80s slider and a low-80s changeup as his secondaries, with more slider usage vs. righties and more changeup usage vs. lefties—but no hesitation to use all three pitches in any matchup. Stieg showed above-average control and has an overall profile that’s reminiscent of former Virginia Tech righty and 2023 second-rounder Drue Hackenberg.
Scouting Grades: Fastball: 50 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 55.

BA Grade/Risk: 45/High
Stieg will be a conundrum for teams in the 2025 draft. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound righthander averaged 93.5 mph over 13 starts with Virginia Tech in 2024 but blew out his elbow at the end of the season and is expected to miss the entire 2025 campaign after having Tommy John surgery. He owns a career 5.25 ERA over 70.1 innings with a 22.3% strikeout rate and 8.7% walk rate. Stieg throws from a low three-quarters slot and primarily uses a two-seam fastball that gets tons of arm-side running action, as well as a low-80s slider and high-usage low-80s changeup. If healthy, Stieg would fit as a top-three round talent pretty comfortably, though his health questions create some uncertainty.

A low-slot righthander with a 6-foot-2, 200-pound frame, Stieg pitched in the low 90s last summer and ran his fastball up to 94 mph. He has touched 95 mph this spring, with solid running life and sink thanks to his arm slot, but that low angle has also made a breaking ball in the upper 70s and low 80s more inconsistent. Stieg has also shown a low 80s changeup. He is committed to Virginia Tech.
