Track Record: Maldonado signed with the Giants in 2021 and has moved slowly through the minors. He debuted in full-season ball in 2023 but lost his 2024 season to Tommy John surgery. He returned in 2025 to Low-A San Jose, where he was used in multi-inning bursts at the beginning of games. His season high, which came on June 28, was 3.2 innings. He helped San Jose claim the California League championship.
Scouting Report: For now, Maldonado attacks hitters with two pitches: a four-seam fastball that averaged 98 mph and peaked at 101 and a slider with powerful two-plane break that sat around 84 mph. Beyond simply building his innings total, Maldonado spent the year tinkering with the grips on both pitches in order to increase their effectiveness. He also needs to show better command of the slider. The team has looked into adding a two-seamer or a changeup to Maldonado’s mix as well. Maldonado is much heavier than his listed weight of 170 pounds, so he’ll need to continue to work to maintain his conditioning as he moves up the ladder. Doing so will help him repeat his delivery and throw enough strikes to reach the big leagues as a flamethrower in the late innings.
The Future: Maldonado’s next step will be High-A Eugene. He’s a pure relief prospect with overpowering stuff in need of refinement across the board. The road to his ceiling is winding, but it might be worth the wait.
