When your Rookie-level club supplies four members of the Top 30 list—Shaun Boyd, Chris Narveson and Billy Schmitt are the others--it’s either a loaded club or you have a picked-over farm system. We'll leave that question for history to answer, though we’ll note that Johnson City was 24-44 in 2000. The Cardinals do have quite a few promising Dominican players entering the system, and Diaz leads the way at this point. He has the build of a ballplayer and the potential to have at least average power. On defense he has good hands and good actions, and he should have enough to stay at third base. Diaz has a long way to go in his development, though, and needs polish in just about every aspect of the game. He'll be a much more effective hitter when he learns to take the ball the other way. The Cardinals look at Diaz as a sleeper, but he'll take a slow progression through the system for now. He could go to Peoria but is more likely headed for New Jersey.
