A former two-year standout at Wofford, Mahlstedt transferred to in-state rival Clemson where across two seasons he established himself as one of the nation’s most effective relievers. Mahlstedt this spring pitched to a 3.00 ERA with 61 strikeouts to just eight walks across 48 innings en route to being named a Stopper of the Year finalist. Like most sidewinders, Mahlstedt has an effective sinker-slider combination. His sinker sits in the high-80s and has been up to 93 with both run and sink, and he consistently gets it in and under the hands of righthanded hitters. Mahlstedt’s high-70s sweeper flashes frisbee-like action, but it also averaged almost nine-inches of vertical break which creates a “rise ball”-esque effect at times. A reliever all the way, Mahlstedt can be deployed multiple times per week and is a tough look for opposing hitters.
