Smyers is a 6-foot-3, 195-pound lefthander who stands out for his strikes and pitchability. He was named the Virginia Gatorade player of the year after he posted a 1.11 ERA with 121 strikeouts in 63 innings. Smyers is a solid mover on the mound with an easy operation and a clean three-quarters slot. He pitched in the upper 80s and topped out at 90 mph during the 2024 travel circuit, but inched his velocity up a tick this spring and touched 92. He has impressive feel to land a slurvy, in-between breaking ball in the 77-81 mph range, and will also show a solid changeup in a similar velocity band. Nothing that Smyers throws now is above-average or plus, but he’s effective with his entire mix thanks to his ability to command the ball. Smyers has shades of 2023 high school lefty Ryan Marohn, who was also a Virginia product and ranked on the back half of the BA 500 in high school but made it to campus at NC State where he immediately jumped into the starting rotation. Smyers could follow a similar path at Alabama if he’s not signed out of high school.
