Track Record: The Dodgers signed Henriquez in 2018, as part of the international class that also included catcher Diego Cartaya. The righthander then spent the next four years kicking around the lower levels of the minor leagues, never going further than Low-A. Tommy John surgery erased his 2023 season, but he emerged from the procedure as a fire-breather capable of melting minor leaguers. He made his big league debut in September, then was included on the Dodgers postseason rosters for the first two rounds of the playoffs.
Scouting Report: Henriquez is big, physical and—if he’s locating–can blow hitters away. His four-seam fastball regularly reaches triple-digits and explodes through the zone, especially when thrown above the belt. He backs the fastball with two similar pitches. The first is a short, sharp slider thrown in the low 90s. The next is a deep-breaking slider in the same velocity range. All three offerings show outstanding life and give hitters fits when Henriquez has his best control and command. His delivery isn’t particularly fluid and features a stab and a pause as part of a shorter arm action. Precision will never be a part of his game, but his power will allow him plenty of margin for error.
The Future: If Henriquez can improve his control just a touch, he has the stuff to be a closer. If not, he’ll fit nicely in the later innings of games. After appearing in the regular year and the postseason, he’ll have a shot to make Los Angeles’ roster out of spring training. If not, Triple-A hitters are in for a world of hurt.
Scouting Grades: Fastball: 70 | Slider: 60 | Cutter: 60 | Control: 40.
Scouting Reports
-
BA Grade: 45/Very High
Track Record: Henriquez fell under the radar in the 2018-19 international signing class and drew little attention when he signed with the Dodgers out of Venezuela as a 16-year-old. He broke out as one of the top pitching prospects as in the Arizona Complex League in 2021 and ascended to the rotation at Low-A Rancho Cucamonga in 2022.
Scouting Report: Henriquez has matured into a big, hard-throwing righthander with some of the best pure stuff in the Dodgers system. His fastball sits 96-98 mph and touches 101 and his mid-80s slider flashes plus with late break off the plate. He also has a firm changeup in the low-90s. Henriquez oozes potential but requires a lot of refinement. His fastball command is below-average and the inconsistency of his delivery causes his fastball to lose its life and play down. He struggles to land his slider in the zone and his changeup has a long way to go. Henriquez flashes average control when his delivery is working, but at other times he shows well below-average control.
The Future: Henriquez has a chance to be a hard-throwing, high-leverage reliever if he can improve his delivery. He'll continue to start in the minors for development purposes.
