Reilly used a massive fall showing back in 2019 to push himself up draft boards in the 2020 draft class out of high school, and eventually ranked as the No. 103 prospect in the class. In spite of that rise, Reilly made it to campus at Vanderbilt, where he split time as a starter and reliever as a freshman, being used in a multi-inning piggyback role. Reilly has consistently shown impressive pure stuff, but his control has held him back, both with Vanderbilt and in two stints with Orleans in the Cape Cod League. He has never posted a walk rate lower than the 13.3% rate he managed in 2023, when he posted a 5.77 ERA over 48.1 innings with a 28.9% strikeout rate. Reilly has an elite pitcher’s physique, with a lean 6-foot-3, 208-pound frame as well as a fast arm and three-quarter slot, with a bit of recoil in his finish. Reilly has a plus fastball that averaged 94-95 mph this spring, has been up to 98 at peak velocity and has great carry and generated a 31% miss rate this spring. He has both a four-seam and two-seam variation, which has a bit more run and sink, and he throws both a mid-80s slider and a hard cutter in the 89-91 mph range. Reilly mostly pitched off the fastball/slider/cutter this spring, but he also has a mid-80s changeup with slight fading action that he throws to lefties and used less than 10% of the time in 2023. Reilly has the stuff and delivery to start, but his long track record of below-average control and command could make him a power reliever in pro ball.

Track Record: Reilly was one of the top prep arms in the 2020 draft but ended up taking his intriguing stuff to Vanderbilt, where a lack of command limited him to mostly a relief role. The Pirates signed him for just below slot—$455,600—in the fifth round in 2023 and moved him to the rotation at High-A Greensboro. Reilly was faring well there when he was sent to Baltimore in a prospect-for-prospect deal that netted the Pirates outfielder/first baseman Billy Cook.

Scouting Report: Reilly has good angle on a fastball that out of the bullpen was up to 100 mph but as a starter sat comfortably in the low-to-mid 90s, occasionally up to 97 mph. That pitch and his plus cutter are the featured pitches of his arsenal, and in his first year as a starter, Reilly added a bigger, sweepier slider and a more vertical, gyro breaking ball in the variety of the “death ball”. Those pitches have average potential as he gains experience working with them, though Reilly made strides both before and after the trade to diversify his arsenal, build up to a starter’s workload and improve his pitch shapes.

The Future: His relief past and power arsenal lend themselves to a move back to the bullpen at some point, but Reilly will get a chance to grow into a back-end starter with the Orioles. He’ll likely return to Double-A Bowie to start 2025.

Reilly popped up in the fall after a strong showing in Jupiter. He took the mound for six innings, something that’s uncommon at the event, and showed increased velocity on his fastball. His fastball went from sitting at 85-90 mph in July to 90-95 in the fall, topping out at 96, albeit in a small sample size. The increase in velocity was a result of massive gains to his body. At 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, Reilly has the feel of a power righthander and has the potential for a plus fastball if he can keep up the consistency he showed in the fall. In addition to his fastball, he throws a power curveball that has a chance to profile as a 60-grade pitch, and a changeup that is presently behind the other two pitches but could become average. Reilly has better raw stuff than Alex Santos and Jason Savacool, but the key for him is maintaining consistency in the future. A repeatable delivery and an ability to throw strikes could help Reilly continue to profile as a starter. He’s committed to Vanderbilt.
