Age At Draft: 18.8
BA Grade: 55/Extreme
McKenzie is a lean and projectable lefthander with a 6-foot-2, 185-pound frame, a smooth delivery and starter attributes. He has a balanced, loose and easy delivery and throws from a three-quarters slot with impressive arm speed. During the 2024 summer showcase circuit, McKenzie’s fastball velocity was up and down from outing to outing, occasionally sitting in the upper 80s and at other times bumping 93-94 mph. Early in the 2025 spring season he came out of the gate showing a more consistently firm fastball that was in the low 90s and touching 95, though that power fell off toward the second half of the season. McKenzie has long shown aptitude to spin a breaking ball. He throws a 75-79 mph power curveball with high spin rates that get into the 3,000 rpm range. It’s an easy plus projection with a ton of depth and hard biting action at its best that should be a swing-and-miss offering to lefties and righties. McKenzie also improved his changeup during his high school season. What was previously a distant third offering has become a usable mid-80s change-of-pace piece that gives him a complete pitch mix and will help keep hitters guessing a bit more. There is some length to McKenzie’s arm stroke that could inhibit his command, but in general he’s done a nice job filling up the zone and throwing strikes. He is committed to LSU, but was getting late first-round buzz early in the spring and should still fit as a top-two-rounds arm.
