Johnston is one of the only freshmen to make waves in a wood-bat collegiate league before arriving on campus, earning Appalachian League all-star honors with the Greeneville Fly Boys. Following an impressive fall, Johnston won the 2025 starting third base job and hit .260/.297/.534 with a team-leading 30 extra-base hits, including 15 home runs, and 55 RBIs. He is a physical player who looks to do damage each time in the box and shows an appealing blend of explosiveness and bat speed in his operation. However, Johnston is a free swinger and made contact at just a 66% clip to go along with an overall chase rate of 38%. Going forward, he will need to do a better job of picking up shapes out of the hand and staying within the strike zone.
