Johnson offers significant upside with his talent at the plate and in the field. Hitting from an open stance with a lower-half load he has simplified over the past year, Johnson has a pull-heavy approach with strong hands, excellent bat speed, high-level strength projection and already drives the ball with authority. He typically stays within the strike zone, doesn’t swing and miss much and has a chance to grow into plus raw power. A tick above-average runner, Johnson has a chance to stick at shortstop depending on his physical development. Some scouts think he could outgrow the position and slide to third base as he gets closer to the big leagues, but Johnson is an intelligent player and an athletic defender with quick reactions off the bat and good body coordination. Johnson is adept on both ends of the double play, charges in well on the slow roller and has a plus arm to handle the left side of the infield. -

Johnson is a 6-foot-2, 200-pound shortstop and righthanded hitter who stands out for his quality at-bats. He hits from an open stance and has a pull-heavy approach with strong hands, excellent bat speed and high-level strength projection—though he already drives the ball with authority. Johnson has an advanced approach at the plate and understands what to swing at and what to spit on, with solid contact ability and few swings and misses as well. Johnson has turned in above-average and plus run times in the past, but he also consistently ran slower than that from home-to-first throughout the summer. He has a chance to stick at shortstop with reliable hands, solid instincts and athleticism as well as a strong throwing arm. Johnson is committed to Vanderbilt, and while he doesn’t have a clear carrying tool, his well-rounded game could have him selected in the first few rounds.
