Track Record: In the summer of 2023, the Dodgers dealt two righthanders in Rookie ball to the White Sox in exchange for more international pool money. They used that extra cash to sign Jang, a talented righty from Korea who seemed destined for a high pick in the Korea Baseball Organization. Instead, he landed with Los Angeles and split his first pro season between the Arizona Complex League and Low-A.
Scouting Report: In terms of pure stuff, Jang is up there with nearly any pitcher in the organization. His cutting, riding fastball sat in the mid-90s and touched 98 and was backed by a mid-80s slicing slider, a high-70s curveball and a high-80s changeup. At their best, Jang’s complement of pitches allows him to operate in all quadrants of the strike zone. The fastball and curveball give him weapons to attack north and south, while the slider and changeup give him an east-west mix. To get the most out of his repertoire, Jang will have to improve his control by leaps and bounds. He produced a 17.3% walk rate across both levels, a product of a delivery that could get out whack easily and for long periods. The Dodgers praised Jang’s work ethic but thought some of his strike-throwing issues might have been because he was trying to make every pitch as nasty as possible instead of relying on their natural quality to get hitters out.
The Future: Jang’s next stop is High-A Great Lakes, even if it’s not on Opening Day. If he can get to fringe-average control, he has a chance to make an impact in a rotation.
