A lawnmower accident when he was 2 years old left Prater with only two fingers on his right hand. To adjust, he just cinches up the strap on his glove significantly tighter. Incredibly, he made only one error in three years at Oklahoma and even showed he could switch-hit in high school. Prater is an extremely effective competitor on the mound. After pitching out of the bullpen as a freshman, he led all Sooners’ starters with a 3.26 ERA as a sophomore and logged a 3.42 ERA through four starts this year before the season shut down. Prater’s fastball sits 90-91 mph and will touch 93-94. His slider gets a little loopy at times, but it’s tough for lefties to pick up and he’s shown he can back foot it to righties. He also uses a moderately effective changeup. Prater's three pitches are average, but everything plays up because he creates solid angle from the first base side of the rubber and has some deception in his closed-off delivery. Prater's slender frame likely won't allow him to add much more weight, so he largely projects as a back-end starter who succeeds on guile and deception. Some scouts think he'd be best as a mid-inning reliever, where his fastball might tick up a little bit.
