A big and physical righthander and outfielder who attends Buford High with righthander Dylan Lesko, Stanford has outstanding arm strength that has scouts excited. Last summer he sat in the 93-95 mph range in short outings and was up to 97 mph. It wouldn’t be surprising for him to be regularly touching triple-digit velocity in a few years. The 6-foot-3, 232-pound righthander also throws a mid-80 slider that has hard, biting action and above-average potential. Stanford overwhelmingly pitched off the fastball/slider combination last summer, but he has flashed a mid-80s changeup that needs a lot of work. Stanford also likes hitting and could be a real two-way player at Georgia Tech, though most scouts prefer his upside on the mound. Scouts who like him are reminded a bit of Austin Riley at the same age, given his size and the thought that pitching will be his calling card at the next level. Stanford isn’t a standout athlete and he’ll need to monitor his frame moving forward as well. Because some teams think he’s more of a reliever than a starter, and because he’s expected to be a tough sign, he could wind up in Atlanta and look to prove his stuff in the ACC—but he is one of the more physical and hard-throwing preps in the class.
