Osman pitched out of the bullpen for three seasons at Arizona State and didn’t find much success, but he blossomed as a starter this spring after transferring to Long Beach State. He went 6-4, 4.60 with 89 strikeouts and 33 walks in 78.1 innings as the Dirtbags’ Friday night starter. Osman attacks hitters from a low, sidearm slot that creates plenty of deception from the left side. His fastball sits 90-92 mph, touches 94-95 and gets on hitters faster than they expect. His best pitch is a sweeping, above-average slider out of the same slot with late bite that gets swings and misses across the bottom of the strike zone. He seldom uses his below-average, mid-80s changeup. Osman struggled to throw strikes at ASU, but he showed improved control at Long Beach and threw more quality strikes as the year went on. He tired late and will have to improve his durability. Osman’s fastball and slider from a low slot should fit in a bullpen in pro ball. He projects to be selected near the back of the top 10 rounds or early on the draft’s third day.
