A 6-foot-4, 225-pound righthander with big stuff and control questions dating back to his high school days, Simon split time as a starter and reliever for Notre Dame this spring. He posted a 5.02 ERA over 28.2 innings, while striking out 51 batters (37.5 K%) and walking 25 (18.4 BB%). While Simon’s control is well below-average, his stuff is quite a bit better than that. He throws a fastball around 95 mph and has pushed the pitch up to 99 this spring at his peak. He’s regularly in the upper 90s with the pitch and it does have solid vertical carry. He pairs the fastball with a mid-80s slider that gets plus grades despite a wrist wrap in the back of his arm stroke—a mechanic that scouts will cite as being detrimental to throwing a consistent breaking ball. Simon generated whiffs at a 57% rate with the pitch this spring. When he has his control together, he can look electric—as he did in late May when he threw five shutout innings against Virginia with eight strikeouts and just two walks—but his control will fluctuate rapidly even between innings when he looks sharp. He’ll need to improve his fastball command in particular, which sets everything else up.
