Drafted in the 4th round (116th overall) by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2020 (signed for $225,000)
One of the tallest pitchers in the 2020 class, Ragsdale is a towering 6-foot-8, 225-pound redshirt junior who flashed tremendously ability but had a limited track record at South Florida. After totaling 31.1 innings as a reliever between his freshman and sophomore seasons, Ragsdale missed all of 2019 after having Tommy John surgery. He returned in 2020 and excited scouts with his combination of stuff, strikes and size before the season shut down. Through four starts, Ragsdale had a 2.84 ERA with 37 strikeouts against just seven walks in 19 innings. Ragsdale has better body control and coordination than most pitchers his size and has steadily improved his control. His long limbs result in some length to his arm action, but he repeats his three-quarters arm stroke reasonably well and has good extension down the mound. Ragsdale's fastball sits in the 90-93 mph range and gets up to 96. He pairs his fastball with a solid-average curveball, but his changeup is below-average. Ragsdale is more of a control-over-command pitcher. Because of that and a below-average third pitch, some scouts think he projects best as a reliever in pro ball. Other teams think Ragsdale can start, however, and consider him worthy of a pick in the fourth-to-sixth round range.
