Monteverde is very well traveled at this point. He began his college career at Virginia Wesleyan, then transferred to Seton Hill (Pa.). But after a solid sophomore season, he missed most of the next two years because of Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow. He transferred to Texas Tech as a graduate transfer and earned the Friday starter role. Monteverde is more crafty than overpowering. He succeeds thanks to plus control of a below-average fastball, average slider and average changeup. He’s a very useful senior sign.

Track Record: After putting together a quality four-year collegiate career between Division II Seton Hill and Texas Tech, Monteverde was selected in the eighth round of the 2021 draft. Monteverde was excellent during his 2023 stint with Double-A Pensacola and pitched his way to a 10-5 record with a 3.32 ERA and 114 strikeouts in 114 innings pitched. Monteverde eventually was promoted to Triple-A Jacksonville, but he got hit around in his two starts. For his performance in Pensacola, Monteverde represented the national League in the 2023 Futures Game.

Scouting Report: Monteverde has a true four-pitch mix and features a high-80s fastball, high-70s curveball, mid-80s slider and low-80s changeup. He has a lean frame and attacks hitters from a high three-quarters slot with above-average arm speed. Monteverde relies on his heater and in 2023 he threw it 52% of the time. While it lacks premium velocity, it plays up due to its ample riding life through the zone. It generated a 25% miss rate and is at its best when located in the top half of the strike zone. His slider has short, late horizontal break and is especially effective given his advanced feel for the pitch. Monteverde’s curveball takes on a bigger shape with plenty of depth and has also proven to be a viable secondary pitch. His changeup might be the most effective of his secondary offerings. Like his slider, it also had a 42% miss rate and flashes tumbling and fading life to his arm side.

The Future: Monteverde will most likely begin 2024 with Triple-A Jacksonville where he will look to potentially earn a big league callup. He profiles as a swingman or back end starter.
