Drafted in the 3rd round (94th overall) by the Cincinnati Reds in 2022 (signed for $522,500)
A small and thin lefthander listed at 6-foot-1, 185 pounds, Hubbart turned in a strong 2021 campaign as a starter with Florida State (3.80 ERA, 71 innings, 94 strikeouts, 29 walks) before heading to the Cape and looking like the best pitcher in the league. In six starts and 31 innings of work, Hubbart posted a 0.87 ERA while striking out 45 batters and walking just eight. He continued to find results this spring as Florida State’s Saturday starter—behind fellow lefthander Parker Messick—and posted a 3.32 ERA over 15 starts and 76 innings. Hubbart won’t light up a radar gun, but his fastball has plenty of traits that allow it to play up. He pitches in the 88-92 mph range, but has around 20 inches of induced vertical break, good extension and an over-the-top slot that make the pitch play like an invisiball at times. He throws a high-spin curveball in the mid 70s, and recently developed a slider around 80 mph that also has big spin rates. Hubbart has thrown a low-80s changeup but largely shelved the pitch this spring in favor of his two breaking balls. He works quickly on the mound and has shown solid-average control.
