Duensing came into the spring with a lot of momentum as he'd shown a 90-94 mph fastball at a winter workout. But during the spring his stuff was less consistent. He generally worked in the 86-89 mph range, although he did bump up to 90-93 in an anticipated matchup against Riley Pint. Duensing is a good athlete with plenty of projection as he's still somewhat baby-faced. There is some effort to his delivery and his slurvy breaking ball needs work, making it more likely he'll make it to Kansas State.

The Angels went almost double over slot to sign the lanky, projectable Duensing to a $501,300 bonus in 2016. The righthander, who is a cousin of big league lefthander Brian Duensing, impressed after signing but regressed in 2017, with a 9.15 ERA, 25 walks and 25 strikeouts in 41.1 innings at the Rookie levels. Duensing, who has a quick arm and quick-twitch body, has impressed coaches with his competitive nature and aggressive approach, and his low-90s fastball with sink should tick up with physical maturity. The Angels would like him to add at least 25 pounds to his wiry frame over the next few years. Duensing's slurvy breaking ball is inconsistent, sometimes delivered with too much sweep, and he needs to increase the separation between his fastball and changeup. Some scouts are also wary of a unique arm action that gives Duensing deception but has also led to mechanical flaws. He got back on track in instructional league and may get a shot at low Class A Burlington in 2018.

Duensing's slurvy breaking ball is inconsistent, sometimes delivered with depth and at other times with too much sweep. He doesn't yet have a lot of feel for a changeup. He pitches with a lot of energy, causing him to rush his three-quarters delivery at times and use too much effort. Still, Duensing will be only 18 next spring and has plenty of time to develop. He'll start in extended spring training with an expected assignment to Rookie-level Orem when Pioneer League play begins.
