Lawson broke out as a junior, emerging as South Florida's best starter this spring. Statistically, his season was very similar to that put together a year ago by former Bulls ace Jimmy Herget, who was drafted in the sixth round, attracting the attention of pro teams. Lawson sits 88-92 mph with his fastball, occasionally reaching 94. He has an average slider and a seldom used changeup. Listed at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, Lawson has a good pitcher's frame, pounds the strike zone and has good pitchability. But he is more of a tweener in pro ball, missing the plus offering of a reliever and the viable changeup needed to be a starter.
