Drafted in the 13th round (394th overall) by the Oakland Athletics in 2022 (signed for $125,000)
One of the tallest pitchers in the draft class at 6-foot-7, Pfennigs emphasizes his height even more with an over-the-top delivery. His north-south approach to the strike zone matches his release point. He can cut his low-90s, below-average fastball when he wants, but he’s too often in the middle or upper third of the strike zone with his heater and it just doesn’t have the movement or angle to live comfortably there. His below-average control also hampers him. Hitters teed off on his fastball to the tune of a .377/.516/.535 slash line. His above-average curveball and hard cutterish slider are much more effective. Pfennigs went 4-1, 3.96 in 2022, but his peripherals (35 hits, 27 walks and 30 strikeouts in 36.2 innings) are more indicative of his season. The hope is that with his athleticism, he could develop as a senior sign, either as a back-of-the-rotation starter or as a reliever who learns to live down in the zone.
