NEW ENGLAND **
(Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont)
1. Aaron Gureckis, of, Nashua (N.H.) HS
Pete Broberg, Chris Carpenter, Carlton Fisk, Mike Remlinger and Billy Swift are first-round picks this region has produced in the past. There are no players remotely in that class this year, but Fisk's nephew, RHP Carrington Fisk, drew curious looks when he hit 90 mph . . . OF Aaron Gureckis has well-rounded tools but all grade out just below-average. His swing appears geared for the aluminum bat. He projects more as a draft-and-follow and has committed to San Jacinto (Texas) JC . . . 1B Aaron Meyer put up good power numbers again this year, but he lacks the athletic ability of former Dartmouth first baseman/quarterback Mark Johnson, who went on to play in the big leagues. It may be unrealistic for a club to buy Meyer out of the final year of an Ivy League education . . . SS/OF Jeff Barry can run with almost any player in the country, but his other tools don't stand out.
