Draft Report Cards: Chicago White Sox

Sale projected to go as high as No. 4 overall before his signability worried teams, yet the White Sox were able to sign him for slot ($1,656,000) at No. 13 and got an almost immediate return on their investment.
Bonus Spending: $3.9 million

BEST PURE HITTER: 3B Andy Wilkins (5) struggled with wood bats with Team USA in 2009, and some teams questioned how well his swing would play against quality pitching, but he hit .307/.396/.463 at Rookie-level Great Falls.  » BEST POWER HITTER: Wilkins, who hit 42 homers in three seasons at Arkansas. » FASTEST RUNNER: OF Randall Thorpe (18) has plus-plus speed but is still figuring out how to get the most out of it on the bases. The White Sox also drafted him in the 29th round out of high school two years ago. » BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER: SS Tyler Saladino (7) is a flashy defender with above-average range and arm strength. C Mike Blanke's (14) catch-and-throw skills were better than Chicago realized.

BEST FASTBALL: RHP Jacob Petricka (2) touched 98 mph in college and 100 during his pro debut. He usually works at 92-96. LHP Chris Sale (1) worked at 90-95 mph with good life as a college starter, then averaged 96 mph as big league reliever, hitting 100 mph three times in a game against the Royals. » BEST SECONDARY PITCH: Sale had one of the best changeups in the draft, though he didn't use it much in the majors. RHP Addison Reed (3) has a knockout slider.

BEST PRO DEBUT: Sale finished the season as Chicago's closer, posting a 1.93 ERA, four saves and 32 strikeouts in 23 big league innings. Wilkins and 2B/SS Drew Lee (12) were all-stars in Rookie leagues, with Lee batting .282 and topping the Appy League with 24 doubles. » BEST ATHLETE: OF Dusty Harvard (34) was recruited by Colorado State and Wyoming in football before deciding to attend Oklahoma State to play baseball. » MOST INTRIGUING BACKGROUND: Unsigned OF Ozney Guillen's (22) father Ozzie manages the White Sox, and the fact the team waited so long to draft Ozney was a bone of contention between Ozzie and general manager Kenny Williams. Unsigned 2B Audry Santana's (48) dad Rafael oversees the club's Dominican operations. Both fathers also played in the majors. INF Ross Wilson (10) was featured on MTV's "Two-A-Days" reality show as a high school quarterback in Alabama. His brother John Parker is a backup QB on the Atlanta Falcons. » CLOSEST TO THE MAJORS: Sale was the first 2010 draftee to reach the majors, and the quickest draftee to get there since the Reds' Ryan Wagner in 2003. Next in line are Reed and Saladino, who finished the season in low Class A. » BEST LATE-ROUND PICK: The White Sox may have their catcher of the future in Blanke, who also has plus power. » THE ONE WHO GOT AWAY: Chicago lost out on projectable RHP Matthew Grimes (4), who will attend Georgia Tech, and offensive-minded 2B Josef Terry (8), who transferred from Cerritos (Calif.) JC to Cal State Fullerton.
