Twins Call Up Casilla

With injuries to big leaguers Rondell White and Jeff Cirillo, the Twins dipped into their Triple-A Rochester reserve to promote second baseman Alexi Casilla and outfielder Josh Rabe.

The Twins acquired the switch-hitting Casilla, 22, from the Angels (for J.C. Romero) in December 2005 and he immediately took to his new organization, leading all Twins farmhands with 50 steals last seasn. Casilla is a spray hitter who offers plus-plus speed and is an adept defender at either middle infield spot.

“He’s a guy who’s always sort of been waiting in the wings,” Twins farm director Jim Rantz said. “All I know is he’s performed wherever he’s been and he’s absolutely earned this opportunity.

“He puts the ball in play, he makes things happen and he’s always a threat.”
