Minor League Transactions: May 24-June 4

Here we present official minor league transactions, conveyed to us by Major League Baseball, for the two-week period May 24-June 4.

Players listed with an asterisk (*) signed a minor league contract with the organization after being removed from the 40-man roster and clearing waivers.

Arizona Diamondbacks
RHP Bobby O'Neill (released by Marlins)
Released: LHP Jason Lane, 3B Michael Weber
Recalled: OF A.J. Pollock
Optioned to Triple-A: C Konrad Schmidt, OF A.J. Pollock
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Jason Lane, 3B Kyle Greene
Reinstated from DL: RHP Chris Jakubauskas, RHP Anthony Meo, LHP Jason Lane

In his first crack at pitching full time, Jason Lane put up a 7.59 ERA and 1.83 WHIP over 15 relief appearances with Triple-A Reno, but the 35-year-old notched a firm strikeout rate (7.9 per nine innings) and probably could latch on with another organization as a pitcher if he so desires. (One significant mark against the lefty: he allowed lefty batters to hit .447 and slug .658 against him this season in 46 showdowns.) Or Lane could resume hitting for a living—he put up an .818 OPS for Las Vegas as a corner outfielder a season ago.

Atlanta Braves
OF Collin DeLome (Bridgeport (Atlantic))
Released: RHP Gardner Adams, 1B Jakob Dalfonso
Acquired: 2B Ruben Gotay from Blue Jays for cash considerations
Recalled: OF Jose Constanza
Added to 40-man roster: C J.C. Boscan, SS Andrelton Simmons
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Kris Medlen, SS Tyler Pastornicky
Placed on 7-day DL: OF Matt Lipka
Reinstated from DL: OF David Rohm

In the midst of a career season in Double-A, slick-fielding 22-year-old shortstop Andrelton Simmons received the call to Atlanta after batting .292/.372/.421 with three homers (a career high) and a 20-to-20 walk-to-strikeout ratio in 171 at-bats for Mississippi.

Baltimore Orioles
LHP Yancorix Adrian, LHP Israel Sosa, 1B Matt Sweeney, 2B Chris Tremblay
Acquired: 1B Steve Pearce from Yankees for cash considerations
Recalled: RHP Stuart Pomeranz, C Ronny Paulino
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Miguel Gonzalez, RHP Steve Johnson, 1B Steve Pearce, 2B Bill Hall
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Tommy Hunter, RHP Steve Johnson, C Luis Exposito, OF Xavier Avery
Option transferred: RHP Dylan Bundy (low Class A to high Class A)
Removed from 40-man: 2B Bill Hall (twice outrighted to Triple-A)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Bobby Bundy, RHP Oliver Drake, C Adam Davis, C Joe Oliveira, OF Trent Mummey
Reinstated from DL: RHP Steve Johnson, LHP Zach Fowler, LHP Jake Pettit, LHP Zach Phillips, 1B Matt Sweeney

One prospect rises and another falls, albeit temporarily, in Birdland. Top prospect Dylan Bundy graduated from low Class A Delmarva with honors, allowing five hits, two walks and two runs (zero earned) over eight starts. He struck out 40 of the 99 South Atlantic League batters he faced.

Four days after Bundy's promotion, Baltimore optioned Xavier Avery to Norfolk after he started his big league career on a 13-for-60 (.217) note. He struck five extra-base hits, walked seven times and stole four bases in five attempts—a fine showing for a 22-year-old rookie with minimal Triple-A time—but the return of Endy Chavez cut into Avery's playing time.

Boston Red Sox
RHP Ross Ohlendorf
Optioned to Triple-A: OF Che-Hsuan Lin
Option transferred: LHP Drake Britton (high Class A to Double-A)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Chris Martin, RHP Pete Ruiz, RHP Madison Younginer, C Jayson Hernandez, 2B Ryan Dent, SS Jose Iglesias
Reinstated from DL: RHP Justin Erasmus, OF Brandon Jacobs, OF Oscar Tejeda

Power lefty Drake Britton pitched five no-hit innings in his Double-A Portland debut, though on the down side he also walked six batters, including three in one inning. The 23-year-old began his third straight season in A-ball on a sour note (10.71 ERA in 19 April innings for high Class A Salem), though he recovered in May to go 2-2, 2.10 with a 29-7 K-BB ratio in 25 2/3 innings.

Chicago Cubs
RHP Shane Lindsay (released by Dodgers), LHP Hung-Chih Kuo (released by Mariners)
Released: LHP Graham Hicks, LHP Nate Robertson
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Rafael Dolis, C Blake Lalli
Removed from 40-man: RHP Michael Bowden (outrighted to Triple-A)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Ricardo Estevez, RHP Su-Min Jung, RHP Shane Lindsay, RHP Rodrigo Lopez, RHP Kenny Socorro, LHP Casey Harman, C Rafael Lopez, C Chad Noble, 1B Ryan Cuneo, 2B Blake DeWitt, OF Elieser Bonne
Transferred to 60-day DL: 2B Brad Zapenas, SS Jonathan Mota, OF Evan Crawford, OF Reggie Golden
Reinstated from DL: RHP Rodrigo Lopez, RHP Kenny Socorro, RHP Robert Whitenack, LHP Jeff Beliveau, LHP Casey Harman, LHP Graham Hicks, C Chad Noble

The Cubs acquired lefty Graham Hicks (plus A.J. Morris and Michael Burgess) in the January ’11 trade that sent Tom Gorzelanny to the Nationals. The Washington ’08 fourth-rounder projected as No. 5-type starter when healthy.

Chicago White Sox
OF Jon Gaston (Fargo-Moorhead (American Association)), OF Cyle Hankerd (Amarillo (American Association)), OF Bill Rice (Camden (Atlantic))
Released: LHP Jon Gulbransen, OF Dusty Harvard

Option transferred: RHP Andrew Brackman (Triple-A to high Class A)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Mark Serrano, RHP Brett Tomko, 1B Donald Lutz
Reinstated from DL: RHP Andrew Brackman, RHP Daniel Tuttle

Jeff Francis exercised the June 1 opt-out clause in his minor league contract. He earned the right due to his major league Article XX(B) free agent status.

Cleveland Indians
LHP Scott Barnes, 1B Matt LaPorta, 3B Lonnie Chisenhall, SS Juan Diaz
Added to 40-man roster: C Luke Carlin
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Zach McAllister
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Trey Haley, OF Bryson Myles, OF Thomas Neal
Reinstated from DL: RHP Tyler Sturdevant, RHP Steve Wright, C Dwight Childs, OF Trevor Crowe

Give credit to Matt LaPorta for rebuilding value with Triple-A Columbus after a pair of humdrum seasons in Cleveland in which he batted .234/.302/.386 in 810 plate appearances—good for an adjusted-OPS eight percent worse than the AL average. The 27-year-old LaPorta hit 14 homers and slugged .606 (which ranked second) in International League play.

Colorado Rockies
C Eliezer Alfonzo
Recalled: RHP Guillermo Moscoso, RHP Carlos Torres (twice), LHP Rex Brothers

Reinstated from DL: RHP Arquimedes Caminero, RHP Alex Sanabia, LHP Grant Dayton, 2B German Duran, SS Nick Green, OF Chris Aguila, OF Jose Duarte

If the name Ricardo Andres sounds familar, that's because he's the player Miami received along with manager Ozzie Guillen in the September deal with the White Sox. He never appeared in a game for a Marlins affiliate.

One-time organization top prospect Jenrry Mejia left the strikeouts in Double-A, but he's allowed a mere six baserunners and two runs through his first 11 1/3 innings for Triple-A Buffalo as he continues the journey back from Tommy John surgery. He has struck out just five of 39 International League batters thus far, however.

New York Yankees
RHP John Maine (released by Red Sox), RHP Ricky Orta (released by Rays), 1B Russ Branyan (re-signed), OF Billy Hart
Released: 1B Russ Branyan (subsequently re-signed)

Sean Doolittle made his major league debut Tuesday, striking out three of four Rangers batters he faced, putting an exclamation point on a season in which he's made a successful transition to pitching while climbing three levels to Oakland. In 25 minor league innings this season he struck out 48, walked seven and allowed just eight hits. Doolittle, the 41st pick in the ’07 draft as a first baseman, struck out eight of 13 batters faced in two Triple-A appearances.

Philadelphia Phillies
RHP Michael Schwimer, C Erik Kratz

Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Garett Claypool, RHP Colton Murray, RHP Drew Naylor, LHP Bryan Morgado
Reinstated from DL: RHP Phillippe Aumont, LHP Ervis Manzanillo, C Bronco Lafrenz

The Phillies gave J.C. Ramirez 26 starts in Double-A last year to show what he can do in a rotation. The results—4.50 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 5.6 strikeouts per nine—were not overwhelming, so Philadelphia shifted him back to relief this season in Double-A, where the results were . . . moderately better. He struck out 18 and walked 14 in 27 1/3 innings for Reading, but after parts of three years in Double-A the Phillies bumped him to Triple-A.

A fifth-rounder just two years ago, righty reliever Stephen Pryor rocketed to the big leagues after dominating Double-A and Triple-A competition. He allowed 12 hits and three runs in 28 innings while striking out 39.

Right fielder Chih-Hsien Chiang smacked 18 homers and put up a 1.050 OPS in half a season for Double-A Portland in the Red Sox system last year, but his production quickly dried up after his July trade to Seattle, culminating in a demotion back to Double-A at the end of May. Chiang batted .228 and slugged .294 in 309 plate appearances for the Mariners organization prior to begin sent back to Jackson.

The Mariners released Sean Henn so that he can sign with Hanwha of Korea Baseball Organization.
